SUMMARY:Mozilla Festival Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The WeObserve team will be running a Workshop Session at this year’s Mozilla Festival in London – the annual space for hackers\, performers\, students\, activists\, scientists\, designers and beyond to share the newest tech\, wildest ideas\, most amazing stories\, and brilliant plans to make the Internet even more awesome. \nREGISTER HERE \n  \n \nBuild your own Citizen Observatory – A ‘CookBook’ for Air Q\, Water Q\, Land Use & Biodiversity monitoring\n  \nCitizen Observatories are community-based environmental monitoring initiatives\, that lead to science or policy outcomes for Air Quality\, Water Quality\, Sound Pollution\, Smell Pollution\, Land Use\, Biodiversity\, and more. They are mostly top-down and invite participants locally – but many communities are starting their own investigations from scratch. In this session we will create a ‘Cookbook’ for DIY Citizen Observatories and prototype or wireframe a website to share that information online. The goal is for anyone interested in such an investigation to find the info they need\, and dip into the stage of the DIY CO project lifecycle they are at. \nThere are a huge range of tools and platforms that can be used for environmental monitoring\, and an equally large number of places where data can be found or shared – but it is all very scattered\, and a huge research effort if you are concerned about an environmental measure in your own community. Our goal is to co-create a ‘Cookbook’ for building your own Citizen Observatory\, sign-posting all of the possible tools and resources\, communities and guidelines\, and places to aggregate and share the data. \nWith enough people\, we will either wireframe or prototype a website to share this info in a logical & useful fashion. If non-tech we’ll focus on user journey of how to DIY a CO. \nThe Workshop will be held on the 7th floor of Ravensbourne University in the Openness Space.

SUMMARY:Citizen Science Interoperability Experiment - kickoff meeting
DESCRIPTION:On June 6 2018\, the EU-funded H2020 Coordination and Support Action\, WeObserve\, with assistance from NextGEOSS\, held a pre-kickoff meeting for the CitSciIE. About 25 people attended the meeting and 2 groups started discussions on data sharing and project description metadata. Details of the meeting are available on the Pre-KickOff meeting webpage. \nThe official kick-off meeting took place on Friday\, September 14th 2018 in Stuttgart\, Germany. The goal was to demonstrate the interoperability within citizen science projects and the way PGC standards can be applied to citizen science. In particular\, the following topics were addressed: \n\nThe use of OGC standards or (e.g. Sensor Web Enablement (SWE)) to support data integration among CS projects\, and with other sources\, esp. authoritative data (e.g by following SWE4CS);\nHow to document critical metadata\, including data quality aspects\, and generate a data quality label;\nThe integration of CS projects/campaigns in Single Sign-On system (SSO) federation;\nThe relationship(s) between OGC standards and data and metadata standards currently used by CS projects\n\nIn the kickoff meeting were confirmed the list of topics\, were defined the goals and the components and the people that will participate on them. Furthermore\, groups were formed to define the tasks and scenarios and the schedule to do them. The practical outcomes were also defined in terms of ER and demonstrations. SUMMARY:Launch of the WeObserve Communities of Practice
DESCRIPTION:WeObserve launched its first three Communities of Practice! The event took place on 6 June 2018 at the University of Geneva\, during dedicated sessions on the Citizen Science Workshop Day of the 2nd International ECSA Conference. It was an exciting opportunity to engage with a wide range of stakeholders on the consolidation of knowledge in the field of citizen science and COs! \nThe WeObserve CoPs aim to serve as the vehicle for sharing information and knowledge on selected key thematic topics related to Citizen Observatories (COs)\, strengthening the knowledge base about COs in order to move citizen science into the mainstream of environmental management and decision making. In total\, WeObserve will develop five CoPs over the course of the project. Each CoP will receive support and tools for managing the CoP activities (online and F2F) and undertaking dissemination and outreach. The CoPs will exist for as long as they provide value to their members\, with WeObserve support to draw on for the coming 2 ½ years. Detailed Terms of Reference for the WeObserve CoPs are available here. \nThe first three CoPs were launched during the first year and in particular on the Citizen Science Workshop Day on 6 June 2018. They included the following topics: \n1) Co-creating citizen observatories and engaging citizens – addressing incentives and barriers for participation\, engagement strategies and citizen-science ethics (led by IHE Delft)\, \n2) Impact and value of citizen observatories for governance – defining socio-economic and environmental impacts of community-based environmental monitoring for public authorities and decision-makers including risk evaluation (led by IHE Delft)\, and \n3) Interoperability and standards for citizen observatories – adopting data quality\, curation and preservation of citizen-science data\, and addressing privacy and licensing for CO sustainability (led by CREAF). \n  \nThe Communities of Practice (CoPs) addressed people already involved in citizen science and citizen observatory initiatives or citizen science working groups\, keen to exchange experiences with like-minded citizen science enthusiasts. The CoPs were intended as a key mechanism to consolidate knowledge on COs inside as well as beyond the WeObserve consortium. As such\, a wide range of stakeholders was invited to take part in the CoPs\, such as public authorities (local\, regional\, national\, EU)\, civil society organisations\, research and academia\, citizens and citizen science working groups. Among the activities that the CoPs aim to undertake within the project’s lifetime include thematic knowledge co-creation\, generating new solutions or agreeing on how to use existing ones\, and knowledge sharing activities (meetings\, events\, conferences). \nThe event  brought out the following opportunities that participation in CoPs brings to all participants: \n\nSharing ideas\, knowledge or experiences and work with others (networking);\nLeveraging ideas or knowledge;\nWorking towards concrete solutions in citizen science and optimise relevant resources;\nHelping broaden your own and your organisation’s knowledge and horizons (capacity development);\nLinking up with relevant initiatives at a global\, national\, regional or local level\n\n
